Raymond Coates was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1967. Graduated from the University of San Francisco undergraduate and law schools and served as a research assistant to the San Mateo County Superior Court prior to joining Low Ball and Lynch in 1968, where he actively practiced until his retirement in 2010.

He served as President of the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada in 1998 and the California Defense Counsel in 2002. He is a member of the State Bar of California, San Mateo County Bar Association, American Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, Association of Defense Trial Attorneys, and the American Board of Trial Advocates.

His practice consists of civil trials, appellate practice, and insurance coverage litigation.
